World Ocean Day Book Release!

World Ocean Day Book Release!

JUNE 8th - 2013

21st Century - The Age of Protection

Not only a voice for the ocean;
This is a journey of an artist”

Six long years in the making and the book is finally complete!

30 Days before the World Ocean Day Ebook Launch an Indiegogo Campaign was launched to "Help" this new very informative book that gives Marine Life a Voice become a paperback book to be donated to schools and libraries. This book was compiled of facts of marine life slaughters, government actions and non-action, and organizations from grass-roots up doing great work.

'EDUCATE to ACTIVATE' Help '21st Century - The Age Of Protection' Into Schools by joining the campaign

There is an Ocean Crisis that needs to be truthfully told &
Why Not through a Visual Voice!

This book has created a visual voice for thousands of marine life calls for action! From sharks, whales, seals, dolphins, turtles, and mass communities by overfishing. These lives have a story that need to be told in order to stop the attrocities inflicted upon them.

A lot of great action from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been documented on a few paintings along with the immediate story on how their actions inspired me to paint them with the whales and seals - Chapters 2 & 3 & 6

Summary from the Book:

"We along with several other species, are being faced with the possibility of extinction.  As a result of extensive research, I have drawn the conclusion that sometime within the past 50-60 years, 90% of everything living on the planet has been affected in a devastating manner.  As an example, currently only 10% of wild lions, sharks and coral reefs remain.  Deforestation is becoming as commonplace as climate change.  One thing is for certain:  Homo sapiens are directly responsible for these atrocities against nature.

A crucial and urgent choice faces us:  we can either continue on this path of extinction or immediately start to protect what we love - LIFE!

I wrote this book in response to the issue of shark finning, initially raised over six years ago with the release of the film, Sharkwater.  At that time, my paintings reflected current issues affecting the world’s oceans, and how we, as a species, were literally transforming this biosphere into a world of waste and consumption.  I also became better acquainted with the conservation actions of Sea Shepherd and their Antarctic whaling campaigns.

These issues were really brought home for me, when I became personally involved in the first land campaign to bring awareness to the dolphin and whale slaughter happening annually in Taiji, Japan; witnessed the collapse of the seal pelt industry as a result of world exposure of the Canadian harp seal slaughter, and finally saw legal protections enacted for sea turtles.

I have recreated these issues on canvas, providing a face and voice to help one understand the issues as described in the following chapters."

I believe in this book after putting so much time in researching and documenting over the years. This journey showed me what passion truly is and how compassion is such a powerful feeling.

Let's give the children the tools of "Truth" so this world has a chance to speak and positive changes can occur.

21st Century - The Age of Protection

Chapter Paintings & Description

This painting is one of my awareness paintings that speaks visually for the sharks. Sharks are being killed by the millions annually, 90 million actually for their fins alone. That means the fins are removed and the living body is thrown back to the ocean to lessen the weight on the ship to allow more fins to be stored. These fins are then sold mostly to Hong Kong, China and around the world to Chinese medicine shops and restaurants. Shark fin soup is the main item for the fins and can be sold between $25 and $150 a bowl.

This is the 1st Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

This is one of my awareness paintings that I painted the visual voice for the whales. The whales are suppose to be protected from a International Moratorium put in place in 1986 by the International Whaling Commission. The Japanese government fails to abide by this protection and uses the word "Research" as their reasons to travel tens of thousands of miles to kill 1035 whales annually. This painting also speaks about the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society that upholds international law to stop the killing of the whales and protect them in the whale sanctuary.

This is the Second Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

The story behind this painting is regarding the 2008 global impacts on harp seals in Canada. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society had a ship of the Canadian coast in International waters witnessing the seal hunt. Later the European Union banned the purchase of Harp Seal Fur from Canada.

This is the 3rd Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

This is one of my awareness paintings for the Dolphins. It gives one a visual voice to share the struggles that dolphins that pass by a small town in Japan called Taiji have to endure. With 23,000 dolphins killed annually in Japan's waters and the removal of young female orphan dolphins into entertainment industries this story must be told!

This is the 4th Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

This is one of my awareness paintings that gives a visual voice for the Sea Turtles. There are only seven species of sea turtles and all of them are either endangered or threatened or both. They have so much going against them naturally with survival however when adding in the human species actions the turtles survival is grave. Many good action is happening very slowly but it is happening.

This painting is the 5th Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

This is one of my awareness paintings that give a visual story of Overfishing and the plight of the Blue Fin Tuna. This action is depleting the ocean of millions of species and causing such an unsustainable action that will ultimately cause the collapse of the commercial fishing industry globally. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Ships are painted into this canvas and story due to their campaign in 2010 called Blue Rage where they set out to stop poaching of the Blue Fin Tuna.

This is the 6th Chapter of my book "21st Century - The Age of Protection"

Ric O'Barry Gets ECO HERO Award

I was honoured to meet Ric O'Barry for the fourth time this year being the third Country too! We have been talking since the beginning of 2010 and met for the first time this past January when I was in Japan, then again in Miami at the Seaquarium for a protest, and finally twice in Canada for two separate awards!

This award was for being an ECO HERO! Please watch the 9min award ceremony with Ric Speaking. At the end he plugs that he normally comes to Canada to protest Marineland and further states not to buy a ticket to any dolphin shows. Period.

Hanging out at the After Party!

Wakayama Region Devastated by Typhoon Talas

Storm-tossed: Firefighters search through houses destroyed by a landslide triggered by Typhoon Talas in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sunday morning. KYODO - Source: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110905a1.html

It was last Dolphin Slaughter season in Taiji when about 65 Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians stayed in the nearby town called Nachikatsuura. This small town is a huge fishing town but not one dolphin comes off the boats - its a 10 minute drive down the coast away. Taiji is not far at all and the news I have found states how hard this area was hit by the dreadful Typhoon Talas. Below is a  video of how large the storm was prior to hitting the Japanese coastline. You do not need to watch it long to see the power it held.

Nachikatsuura and Singu were hit hard in the Wakayama area which was ground zero for the Cove Guardian's who traveled from around the world. I found these following reports (Article posted at end):

"In four towns in Wakayama, including Nachikatsuura and Shingu, more than 3,600 people in 37 areas had been cut off in isolated pockets of the prefecture as of Sunday night, it was learned."

"Seven people went missing in Shingu and 13 in Nachikatsuura."

"Two-thirds of a 39-meter-long iron bridge over the Nachi River in the town of Nachikatsuura collapsed and was washed away in the swollen river. The bridge serves JR West's Kise Line, but no injuries were reported as the train operator halted all of its operations on the line."

Currently there are 20 dead, 55 missing in Talas' wake. The Wakayama region is one that was hit very hard and 12 of the dead found. Below is a  video put out by people who accompanied Ric O'Barry. This video is prior to the heaviest power of the Typhoon and really shows you what the dolphins had to endure to try and stay alive. Needless to say most of the dolphins drowned and we're just waiting on better confirmation.

The dolphins should not have had to endure such irresponsibility and lose their lives. To pack up and run for the hills to save your life and leave behind an animal that feels with emotions and deserves to live as well is "Criminal!" Below is a video of some aftermath of Typhoon Talas with some locals. It looks as bad as the Tsunami that hit months ago in the spring.

The Tsunami and the Typhoon in the Animal Network world seem to have hit on some important dates and issues. As the whale killers were shutdown whaling in the Antarctic by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society the Tsunami came about and devastated the Northern part of Japan where thousands of small porpoises are murdered by harpooning. Then a few days ago Typhoon Talas comes across the southern part of Japan on the start of their Dolphin Killing season. Some may say "So What!" However if you follow the animals within our planet that are exploited and killed for money then you would find this to be an odd coincidence. I believe it is damn sad to see any person or animal die however when I was back in Taiji last January the one thing we prayed for was bad weather to stop the killing for that duration. So the results of these powerful storms may have an impact on the upcoming whaling in the antarctic and now may have an impact on when the 12 Deadly Sins of Taiji actually go out and drive in and kill their first innocent dolphin family.

I am finishing this blog off with the plea from Ric O'Barry prior to any of the dolphins dying in Taiji at Dolphin Base. Its just so sad to neglect a soul that cannot defend themselves when placed into a cage against their own will.

Behind The Barricades In Taiji

I was in Japan for about 9 full days to do work for the dolphins and within that time I was able to find some great locations to view into the cove. I have taken some photos from the video I was able to capture while in my second barricade jump. This second jump was an extremely close call when I was almost caught. The police were scouring the bushes and were all over where I was but I was not hidden very well and simply I should have been caught. However I was not seen and surprisingly I was staring right into the cops eyes while he was ready to walk right to me! At this moment I accepted that I was busted behind the barricade and just waited for the man to see me and start yelling. Then his phone rang at the same time I was looking at him! He started to talk on his phone really loud while I was still leaning back in the bush and waiting for him to have a glimpse of my figure. Then within moments he hung up his phone and walked away. Whew! I could not believe it! I was safe for the moment!

I then could hear a lot of them behind me talking to eachother. I had very thick brush behind me so they could not see me this way without walking back around where the other man was located. I thought if I was going to be stuck here behind the barricades then I must get some video film and I had both my cameras with me. I could not use my Camera video since its large and akward so luckily I had my hand held video camera with me and was able to lean forward as if I was touching my toes to aim the lens towards the cove action.

The video camera had an awesome zoom lens and I was able to get up close and personal at times. The only problem filming this horrific scene was keeping my feet awake and my stomach from cramping and my hand from shaking! Yes, my bent over position so I would not make any noise and be heard by the police I was really painful. My feet in time went to sleep and every few minutes forced me to lean back and wiggle my toes to get the blood circulation moving again. Then my stomach was aching from the crunch I put on it from the akward bend. The only thing that really pissed me off was my one main thumb that is needed to hold the camera still would just start to shake uncontrollably. I tried many things to get my hand steady and did my best to get as much video as possible.

As I was reaching and trying to find the best view to film I noticed a lone dolphin moving on the other side of the killing area. Then I watched a fisherman walk over and start to touch the dolphin. I thought he was going to just grab the rope on his tail and drag him over with his family. However this man put his body weight on the dolphin and I couldn't believe it but he was drowning the dolphin. Then he was dragging the lifeless body of this Risso Dolphin and had to walk around the boat that was splitting the killing zone in half. He dragged the dolphin through the blood pouring from under the tarp and then behind the tarp with his/her family that were currently watching their family die one by one.

After the dolphins had been all killed and tied to the side of the boat they make sure that a tarp is over the bodies so no cameras can photograph or film the bodies. This action shows they are embarassed and feel the shame by having to cover cove, the killing, and then the transport of the bodies. This moment the cove went silent, the voices behind me disappeared and the wait to leave began.

You cannot just jump up and walk out when you clearly were not allowed to be on this side of the fence even though the sign was just a warning of a cliff for safety reasons. I was told that others have been caught and removed but didn't know what happened to them. This was my second slaughter I witnessed in 3 days in Japan and my second time jumping the barricades with no fear whatsoever! As I waited the time dragged, the sun beat down on me and the nature sounds were beautiful. Then I heard some crackling! My mind was racing about a cop hiding near me and was just waiting it out to see who starts to move. The sound got louder and I started to look at that direction and seen this hat moving and as I looked further I knew who it was! I waved and she thought I was a cop and thought she was busted. It took a few moments when she realized who I was and I couldn't believe there were more people hidden up here too!

It was about 30 minutes since the slaughter ended and I decided to take the chance to see if the coast was clear! I slowly moved and took my time making my way to see the fence and the open field. I stopped and hide because a cop was walking up and looked around and then walked away. I waited about another 10 minutes and then made my move again. The coast was clear and I went back into the bush to gather my cameras and give the others the message to get out now. We all got out and met others at the bottom of the hill and took off in our cars. I was so hyper with a beating heart and excitement of being alive doing what I loved and that was being there for animals! Now I share with you all a bit of the video I managed to gather and pictures so you all can see what I experienced!

Below I have pictures of what I seen from my video and a video if you care to watch it but warning it does shake a little bit and could be hard to see.

After the Drive in of 6 Risso Dolphins the fishermen have already placed rope around their tails and staked them under the killing tarp within the cove.

They search for the tarp to block cameras from viewing their means of slaughtering the dolphins.

The Dolphins try and resist as much as they possibly can! They have been stressed for at least 2 hours now from the drive to this lasso on their tail staked to the ground of the cove.

BELOW IS WHERE YOU WILL WITNESS A DROWNING

A lone Risso Dolphin is off to the top left corner.

A fishermen walks over to the lone dolphin.

He starts to grab the dolphin.

He then is placing his weight down on the lone dolphin drowning him.

He then starts to drag the lone dolphin lifelessly over to the others currently being murdered.

The dolphin still has not moved to try and escape show no signs of life.

The fisherman dragging the lone dolphin goes waist deep into the blood filled water.

Sadly the lone dolphin still does not move and is now entering the blood filled water of his family.

The fisherman is now behind the tarp watching the other dolphin's being killed while still dragging the dead dolphin.

The dolphin is almost behind the tarp now to be with his/her family while they kill them.

All you can see now is the blood spilt of innocent sentient beings that were free migrating by Japan only hours before!

DOLPHINS BEING PREPARED FOR TRANSPORT

The main Killer is in the wet suit and is helping tie the dolphins to the boat.

The dolphin bodies are floating lifelessly while they try and cover their shame.

The tarp is being tied and the dolphins are all tied by their tails to the boat for dragging.

You can see the dolphins tied to the front while they try and keep the tarp over the bodies.

The bodies keep exposing themselves.

`9 Days in Taiji` Posters

Its amazing how one thing leads to another and I am the first to tell anyone and everyone to take ALL OPPORTUNITIES - They will lead to more and take them too!

My 9 days in Taiji were life changing from the loss of almost 90 Dolphins of 4 species to the meeting of other passionate people that were able to make it to ground zero and share their energy and support for the dolphins. The stories I learned from each of the people I met are their own amazing stories that I can say are being talked about, shared, and respected from others within their own communities and myself.

I would like to share you with some amazing work done by three artists. One would be myself but not my art but my physical passion as an activist to use my fearless skill to create a mind over matter situation and endure the frigid cold for 30 minutes while it will never compare to the suffering and loss of life from the dolphins. The second artist would be Libby Katsinis - the Cove Guardian campaign leader who`s background is photography and she showed it very well with sharing her skill for these art pieces below. The third but not least of any sort is the artist who finalized the connection to us all and that is Pete Mander who is also an amazing artist in many ways from expensive collector costumes of the Predator to a visual artist.

I always say good things come in threes because I`m an optomistic person filled with positive energy and we connected in our own way to create a few posters that we hope to put out a great message - `PROTECT THE DOLPHINS`. These words were discussed to me by Ric O`Barry who knows how to do such that - Protect the Dolphins. So actually that would make 4 people and actually I`m sure there is more and that is what  positive energy does when emitted. The actions in a positive manner will extinguish the negative actions of any being that chooses to make such actions.

Please view the poster and share if you like - they will be up for sale soon to raise money for either the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society`s Cove Guardian action or Save Japan Dolphins. It will be the choice of the buyer where their money goes and both are for the dolphins.

So if you`re interested now then email me at timmons.animal.artist@gmail.com and tell me which one since there is 3 posted I will number them 1, 2, 3.

The Ying & The Yang

Since I have been in Japan I have had a ton of "Ying/Yang" thoughts or opposites of attraction. The people here are so amazing, respecting and constantly bowing to one another. The respect for nature with praying temples in the forest and at waterfalls is amazing. The actual beauty that surrounds us her is incredible with high hills that go back as far as the eye allows us to see. Not sure to call this the Ying or the Yang but let's say it is totally opposite to what happens in Taiji and the Killing Cove they call their own.

Today's events at Taiji were a Ying and Yang moment which left us with mixed feelings. We were put through the suffering and killing of dolphins - Risso dolphins - and then we witnessed a rescue of a dolphin. Yes you are reading that correctly - a rescue of a dolphin.

The ships were out far past the regular time frame of 9:30am with no dolphins on the horizon but I believe with 2 days of no dolphin kills they forced themselves to stay out longer than usual to make up for that. Well they did find themselves some dolphins to drive in and that was about 12 to 15 Risso Dolphins. It was sad really to see this happen when we almost felt it was going to be the 3rd day with no kills but sadly the 12 Deadly Sins of Taiji took that away from us.

As the drive was being pushed towards the harbour some dolphins strayed from the pod and went fearing for their lives into the harbour while the rest of the pod continued on and pushed into the Cove. Sadly the Cove took more intelligent sentient beings this morning to add to the other lives lost in this dolphin graveyard. However the few Risso Dolphins that broke from the pack were swimming around in the harbour. Then for some reason 2 of them left leaving behind 1 dolphin.

The one remaining dolphin for some reason was swimming in one area near the captive dolpin pens in the harbour and was swimming in a circle. You could almost pick the spot he/she was going to come up for a breath. It seemed very sad as if he/she were waiting for its mate or parent to find him/her. We watched the dolphin for awhile since the dolphin bodies from the cove were already transfered to the dolphin slaughterhouse and the fishermen seemed to be done for the day. We were planning to do shift work to keep an eye on the dolpin incase the fishermen decided to wait until we were gone to go and capture - then kill the dolpin for food.

Then 2 boats came out and had about 8 fishermen with one snorkeler. They came up to the last dolpin pen and slowly turned not to scare the free dolphin that did not want to leave the harbour. They started to put out their nets and they successfully closed off the freedom from the dolphin. We were very worried about this whole situation and a dozen cameras and more eyes were staring at this whole ordeal. It wasn't until we seen the dolphin stretcher that we knew they were going to lift the dolpin out of the water to relocate it but where?

As I was filming the situation and snapping photos here and there the fishermen managed to lift the dolpin out and into a small boat almost unaware of my 2 lenses. One boat took off out of the harbour and the other 2 started to take the netting up and back into the boats. At that moment I knew the dolphin was on the boat that left. I then quickly ran to my car and me and Sheri met other Cove Guardians at the Look Out Point to watch the boat and ensure that this was actually a rescue and not a ploy to hide the killing.

I climbed down the cliff at the look out and scaled across some rock at the bottom of the cliff near the ocean. I found a great spot to set up my camera the best I could and film the boat heading out to sea. After they reached a very good distance from the harbour they lifted their motor and started to shuffle about in the boat. It was tough to see but the boat had successfully been freed of the dolphin and the boat turned around and headed back to port.

This day really gave a Ying Yang feeling of mixed feelings from the horrific cruelty, fear, sounds, and finally death of the 12 to 15 Risso dolphins all the way to the happy moment of seeing this amazing sentient being carted off to the open ocean to live. However the poor Risso was left alone with 95% of its family decimated with the cove walls by the same men who freed it. Now this is the country of the "Ying Yang" and this ordeal today showed the disregard of compassion within the work hours of the cove to the compassion after hours to the freedom and/or relocation of the last remaining lost dolphin from the pod. It may be because we chose to stay with this dolphin no matter what or some of these fishermen do really have a heart and may not like how they have to earn their money to feed their family.

When we arrived they were searching for the dolphin and then left to the harbour.

Captivity Preparations in Taiji Caught on Camera Jan. 21st-2011

January 21st - Taiji ~ Japan

Heading to Taiji today we were surprised to see a truck that had already loaded some dolphins onto it. Not sure how many but having the dolphin trainers there in their wetsuits and the people in the truck constantly watering the dolphins were positive signs it was real. The truck was right next to the dolphin slaughtering plant and within the bay there is the Dolphin Pens which we believe they came from.

The dolphins from the dolphin pens are heading to captivity of entertainment where they will work the rest of their lives in a concrete pool, loud music blaring, and loneliness. If its not one thing its another here in Taiji it seems. For a tiny town on the shores of the Pacific Ocean its quite busy.

The truck left and we needed to keep an eye on the 12 Deadly Sins so we are not sure where it was heading and/or the final destination for slavery.

The 12 Deadly Sins were out on this brisk sunny morning and stretched across the ocean like a snake. It was shortly after 9am here in Japan that the 12 deadly sins decided to push full tilt to the Taiji Harbour and finish for the day. That is right! There were no Dolphins found today and no kills to watch and report. From seeing the sadness of watching dolphins being trucked away for captivity as orphans and then to see freedom for any dolphins migrating past Taiji makes me have very mixed feelings today.

A Vegan Speciest?

Ever since I decided to follow my path to Japan I have heard so much about the word Speciest and/or Single Issue Campaigns. A person who is considered a "speciest-ist" is someone who takes one species over another while eating the other one. Now recently other vegan abolitionist are frowning down upon a vegan activist that does action for only one animal and calling their action "Speciest" and doesn't help the end to all suffering.

Now to start off I am living a vegan lifestyle and I am volunteering my time for action to help animals anywhere in the world. To state "I" as a vegan is a speciest for wanting to be there for dolphins is an outrage. The dolphins amongst all other animals deserves support and protection no matter where they are in the world. In this case they are in Japanese waters and this is where their lives end.

The movie "The Cove" in my eyes has woke up millions of people to see what is happening to dolphins in Japan. However I see this awakening go even further since I do organize protests and demonstrations on the streets and this year alone I have had over 40 new activists come to the events to support the dolphins. Some of these activists became vegetarians instantly while others are making the transition. Also a good portion of them are organizing their own events for animals and have found a new path and/or organizations to support. Now when people take that thought of feeling the pain and suffering of the dolphin and make a conscious choice to bring it to the streets then they are more susceptible to be open to more animal sufferings. Since I am the leader of my own events and I am living a vegan lifestyle I do speak about all animals and therefore these people are exposed and learn.

A movie like "The Cove" that speaks about ocean animals grabs the attention of people who admire those animals. This to me is a start down the right path and makes it easier as an activist for animals to bring more information to them to have them walk further down this path. We as vegans and animal activists need to open our arms up to anyone that wants to help and learn about the attrocities towards animals. To bash people especially ones that want to learn because they have not changed their diet yet is wrong in my opinion since they have made the step to "Ask". My path as a vegan is to co-mingle with meat eaters so they know what I do, what I eat, and why. If we just hung out with only people living a vegan lifestyle then how do we grow?

Another issue I have heard is that the producer of "The Cove" lives with a meat eating family. Honestly it would be great to have the whole family not eat any animals but at this moment I am more happy that he has affected millions internationally that exceeds the 2 he lives amongst. I love anyone that speaks for animals and does good deeds to help any of them from domesticated pets, strays, ferals, forest rehabilitation, etc however when I have a chance I speak about why I went further just to have it resonate within their mind. Awareness is an amazing action because most people just don't know!

So please accept more meat eaters into your life so they can be exposed to your living habits and talk about why you have changed instead of pointing fingers and throwing rocks at other positive actions. I want the vegan lifestyle to be everyone's choice and not one way is the best. I am all about diversity but what I am very strongly supportive to is "Positive Action" since it makes people want to listen and become apart of the action.

Stay positive its the only energy that the darkness cannot extinguish!

The next and final event I have coming up is January 8th in Hamilton at the 3rd floor of Bizclip on #327 King Street West with the band AdvertEyes and Vegan Food cooked by a chef. You can view more details here: FACEBOOK R.S.V.P.
