Protect The Amazon - Brazil (August 20th) & International Solidarity (August 22nd)
This past weekend so many cities/countries from around the world came together in solidarity to be as one with the Indigenous people, animals, plants of the Amazon!
The Amazon is in dire straits! The Forest Code has been altered after 46 years of protecting the Amazon. Its Criminal to know that the Forest Code was altered to allow a large dam called the Belo Monte to be built and cause so much destruction. It will be the 3rd largest dam in the world and Belo Monte means Beautiful Mountain.
Well this Beautiful Mountain is going to Flood the Beautiful Amazon - 60% of the Amazon is planned to be flooded by this dam. In order to feed this dam they have to construct 68 other dams that will cut off the Xingu River at the point its called "The Big Bend". Within the Big Bend on the Xingu River lives approximately 50,000 indigenous people and over 100,000 different animals and plant species. The river is transportation, food, and home to these people, animals, and a very unique biodiversity that we still do not fully understand.
People have already been killed for this Belo Monte construction plan and this is why we must stand with the Brazilian Indigenous people before the lungs of the earth is drowned by its own rivers of life.

Over the last two months, Brazilians have witnessed an alarming assault on the Amazon and the people who live there.
The government approved construction of the disastrous Belo Monte Dam, allowing heavy machinery to break ground on the banks of the Xingu River.
The Brazilian Congress is on the verge of approving a major rollback of the Brazilian Forestry Code, already causing a huge spike in deforestation.
Leading forest guardians have been victims of murder and intimidation.
This is one of the defining environmental struggles of our times; the assault on the Amazon must stop! We, the international community, need to stand in solidarity with the growing numbers of Brazilians calling for environmental sanity and respect for human rights in the Amazon. Together, we can make a difference.
The Movement to Defend the Brazilian Amazon is a coalition of various sectors of society, including Brazilian and international NGOs, social movements, human rights activists, environmentalists, students, and many other supporters.
The Belo Monte Dam project is already wreaking havoc in the region, causing large-scale displacement of urban and rural populations, while placing overwhelming strain on social services and sparking a rapid rise in criminality. Work camps are being built, forests are being decimated, and the Xingu River is under imminent threat. The construction of the Belo Monte Dam is an announcement of disaster, but it could be just the beginning. Belo Monte is the first of a major onslaught of planned dams in the Amazon, which will have devastating impacts for the environment, indigenous peoples and other local communities.
The proposed slashing of the Forest Code's ecological protections represents a clash between profit-driven economic interests and those favoring socially and environmentally sustainable development. Opponents of the Code clearly have the upper hand: deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon have surged in recent months, in anticipation of the relaxed regulations and amnesty for past illegal logging.
The Belo Monte Dam and the new Forest Code debates coincide with an outrageous rise in murders of the nonviolent activists who have stood in the way of logging and other destructive activities. Threats to indigenous leaders and activists have also risen as the situation in the Amazon becomes increasingly chaotic.
I wanted to share what I found to be a great resource! All the current events from around the world that are supporting September 1st "Celebrate Japan Dolphins Day". Ric O'Barry will be in Japan with other supporters. They will be meeting in Osaka and taking a Bus over to Taiji. This will be a peaceful prayer time for the dolphins that have died and are about to die. Since Taiji has increased their police patrol of 100 officers to be manned 24 hours per day this year will be interesting. Ric states that if the police turn them away from the cove they will leave peacefully.
September 1, 2011 is the start of the Taiji Dolphin Hunt. During the 2010-2011 drive hunt, the Taiji Fisheries Union killed 850 dolphins. An additional 171 were sold into captivity. Let's rally together at Japanese Embassies and Consulates around the globe to share a message of solidarity: JAPAN, LET THE DOLPHINS LIVE & BE FREE!!! ...
