"Earth Warriors Award" Goes To!

"EARTH WARRIORS AWARD" GOES TO!

The nominations came in and choices have been made to receive such a gratious award for such compassionate individuals!

Earth Warriors Award was created by Bob Timmons, "Artist for the Ocean" because he has seen such great actions from people, businesses, and grassroots organizations that he feels need to receive an honour of recognition. This recognition can get their story out past the walls in their area and hopefully create more opportunities as people learn about the journey they are on and how they may be able to help and/or support. This month has 4 "Earth Warriors Awards" being sent out to very much deserving individuals for their incredible work for life on this planet.

We created different categories to Award a Celebrity Activist, Business, Personal Activist, and a Charitable Organization for this month of February. This gives everyone more stories to read and learn about and also more ways to help.

The categories are:

1. Celebrity Activist: This category is for an activist that is world reknowned for their years of effort and accomplishments. This does not mean they make millions doing movies for entertainment purposes however may have completed some documentaries that have helped the journey they are on to educate the public. This category's "Earth Warriors Award" goes to RIC O'BARRY!

Ric O'Barry has done some amazing action for the Dolphin Species and the ocean itself. He has been traveling the world to help any dolphin in distress ever since his co-host "Cathy" from the show "Flipper" died and made him realize they did not belong in captivity. At this point Ric opened his eyes and mind to shut the marine animal exploitation industry down. Ric is involved with Earth Island Institute and Ric O'Barry's The Dolphin Project.

In 2009, the oscar winning documentary "The Cove" hit the theatres showcasing Ric and his efforts in the small village of Japan named Taiji. In Taiji they have a "Drive - Fishery" action where they go out miles into the ocean and find dolphins in a feeding area and drive them back using an imaginary wall of sound. Here is when the action of picking desirable dolphins and the rest of the "Family Pod" are killed for food. This is something not only Ric wants to see an end to but the entire activist world.

We are honoured to give Ric O'Barry an "Earth Warriors Award" for his past, present, and future efforts for the Dolphins and the Ocean.

Follow Ric O'Barry and Share this Award with him on his Twitter Accounts: Ric O'Barry, The Dolphin Project, and Earth Island Institute!

2. Personal Activist: This category is for an activist that may not be well-known but has done great efforts that have been noticeable. This category's "Earth Warriors Award" goes to PHIL DEMERS!

Phil Demers was the first whistle blower of the infamous "Marineland Canada" in Niagara Falls. He had worked at this establishment for over a decade and witnessed some odd events but it wasn't until 2012 that he witnessed cruelty beyond belief. It was off season time when Phil witnessed skin peeling off dolphins and the eyes of many of the marine animals were bad and/or become blind. This horrific situation was enough to push Phil to quit his position as a marine animal trainer and that is when he told his story to the Toronto Star.
The Toronto Star created an amazing buzz globally and especially locally to Ontario regarding animal abuse that was happening behind the walls of Marineland Canada. Phil's actions started the ball rolling and more employees were quitting and coming forward to explain their experiences and witnessing of cruelty that they felt needed to be exposed and stopped to protect the animals.

This situation is still going on and Marineland is starting to sue many people they believe have participated in the exposure including Phil Demers. Phil is being sued for 1.5 million dollars and has set up an Indiegogo fundraiser to help with lawyer costs to fight this corporation called "Marineland Canada" that has been mistreating and hiding animal abuse for decades.

We are honoured to give Phil Demers an "Earth Warriors Award" for his past, present, and future efforts for the exposure and possibly shutdown of Marineland Canada and awakening minds about Captivity.

Follow and Share this article with Phil Demers on his Twiiter account!

3. Charitable Organization: This category is for an low-key organization that does great things! Its an organization that only gets donations to keep running. This category's "Earth Warriors Award" goes to Rose Gergely founder of Refuge RR for Horses!

Rose Gergely started Refuge RR for Horses a couple decades ago with only horses and in Quebec, Canada. Within the first couple years Rose moved the Refuge to Alexandria, Ontario where she not only takes in abused and neglected horses but she has increased her animal residency to 480 animals ranging from mice, hamsters, cats, dogs, goats, ducks, cows, chickens, pigs, all the way to 80 horses.

Rose is a powerful lady with energy to save save save animals in distress. She has extremely limited space now but continues to utilize her network to place animals in adoption and/or foster homes. She cannot turn away an animal that is in need of medical help since all the animals in the refuge have come from abusive natured situations. Rose single-handed feeds these animals on a daily basis while her small dedicated team of volunteers create ideas to continue raising money to help feed all these animals.

Recently the refuge completed a 2 year challenge they had regarding no water. Not one animal felt the stress of no water available on the property since Rose and her team continued to work hard to pay for truckloads of water on a weekly basis that could cost up to $1200 a week in a hot summer. This challenge was completed in December 2012 when a drilling company struck water on the property and set up a slow trickle system to allow the well to last forever!

Rose does not get a break, a vacation, or time alone with 480 animals however today we are honoured to give Rose Gergely the "Earth Warriors Award" for her past, present, and future actions to give a safe haven to abused animals of all types and sizes!

Follow Refuge RR for Horses on Facebook and share this article.

4. Non-Profit Organization: This category is similar to the Charitable Organization. This category's "Earth Warriors Award" goes to PROMAR & Volunteers!

PROMAR is from Spain and stands for "PROGRAMA EN DEFENSEA DE LA MARINA". This non-profit has been noticed recently for their efforts with a baby dolphin named Marcos that was found abandoned, alone, and in need of help last August 2012 near Roquetas de Mar on the Southern part of Spain. This dolphin was of the Black Stripe dolphin species a palegic animal that never sees land.

PROMAR and their volunteers worked around the clock to do what they can to help make Marcos stay as comfortable, loving, and safe as they possibly could. Ric O'Barry was involved at the beginning of the rescue helping the volunteers set up Marcos seapen. The efforts went on for months and sadly earlier this month Marcos passed away.

We are honoured to give PROMAR & Volunteers an "Earth Warriors Award" for his past, present, and future efforts for their help not only with Marcos the Striped Dolphin but with other marine life rehab & release programs.

You can read an article in more details about Marcos' Story here: MARCOS

----

All of these amazing Earth Warriors will receive their award in the next week or so! Please share the word and get involved for the month of March nominations soon to be launched at the Facebook page "ARTIST for the OCEAN".

Honouring these 4 Earth Warriors with their amazing efforts: Ric O'Barry, Phil Demers,
Rose Gergely of Refuge RR for Horses, & PROMAR and Volunteers.

Wakayama Region Devastated by Typhoon Talas

Storm-tossed: Firefighters search through houses destroyed by a landslide triggered by Typhoon Talas in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sunday morning. KYODO - Source: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110905a1.html

It was last Dolphin Slaughter season in Taiji when about 65 Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians stayed in the nearby town called Nachikatsuura. This small town is a huge fishing town but not one dolphin comes off the boats - its a 10 minute drive down the coast away. Taiji is not far at all and the news I have found states how hard this area was hit by the dreadful Typhoon Talas. Below is a  video of how large the storm was prior to hitting the Japanese coastline. You do not need to watch it long to see the power it held.

Nachikatsuura and Singu were hit hard in the Wakayama area which was ground zero for the Cove Guardian's who traveled from around the world. I found these following reports (Article posted at end):

"In four towns in Wakayama, including Nachikatsuura and Shingu, more than 3,600 people in 37 areas had been cut off in isolated pockets of the prefecture as of Sunday night, it was learned."

"Seven people went missing in Shingu and 13 in Nachikatsuura."

"Two-thirds of a 39-meter-long iron bridge over the Nachi River in the town of Nachikatsuura collapsed and was washed away in the swollen river. The bridge serves JR West's Kise Line, but no injuries were reported as the train operator halted all of its operations on the line."

Currently there are 20 dead, 55 missing in Talas' wake. The Wakayama region is one that was hit very hard and 12 of the dead found. Below is a  video put out by people who accompanied Ric O'Barry. This video is prior to the heaviest power of the Typhoon and really shows you what the dolphins had to endure to try and stay alive. Needless to say most of the dolphins drowned and we're just waiting on better confirmation.

The dolphins should not have had to endure such irresponsibility and lose their lives. To pack up and run for the hills to save your life and leave behind an animal that feels with emotions and deserves to live as well is "Criminal!" Below is a video of some aftermath of Typhoon Talas with some locals. It looks as bad as the Tsunami that hit months ago in the spring.

The Tsunami and the Typhoon in the Animal Network world seem to have hit on some important dates and issues. As the whale killers were shutdown whaling in the Antarctic by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society the Tsunami came about and devastated the Northern part of Japan where thousands of small porpoises are murdered by harpooning. Then a few days ago Typhoon Talas comes across the southern part of Japan on the start of their Dolphin Killing season. Some may say "So What!" However if you follow the animals within our planet that are exploited and killed for money then you would find this to be an odd coincidence. I believe it is damn sad to see any person or animal die however when I was back in Taiji last January the one thing we prayed for was bad weather to stop the killing for that duration. So the results of these powerful storms may have an impact on the upcoming whaling in the antarctic and now may have an impact on when the 12 Deadly Sins of Taiji actually go out and drive in and kill their first innocent dolphin family.

I am finishing this blog off with the plea from Ric O'Barry prior to any of the dolphins dying in Taiji at Dolphin Base. Its just so sad to neglect a soul that cannot defend themselves when placed into a cage against their own will.

Dolphin Slaughter Season Has Officially Begun

Dolphin Slaughter Season Has Officially Begun!

As planned the International Community stood in solidarity on September 1st regarding the first day of the Taiji dolphin slaughter. Ric O'Barry gathered a bus load of people to meet him in Osaka, Japan and ride down to Taiji to celebrate what he called Dolphin Day. Ric is trying to place a positive spin on such a horrible and disgusting act towards wild animals of the ocean. Ric believes we need to protect and celebrate the lives of the dolphins and I agree with him.

As September 1st came upon Taiji so was a massive Typhoon! The winds were picking up greatly and the rain was pounding down while the waves were crashing against the coastline. This brought great fortune to any dolphins passing by the outside perimeter where the 12 Deadly Sins would search for them but it is the start of grave danger for the captive dolphins in the pens of Taiji.

If you can remember earlier this year when the Tsunami devasted the country of Japan. Well this Tsunami also had some effects on the dolphins in the pens of the town of Taiji. These pens hold in some cases over 20 dolphins. When the Tsunami after effects hit the Taiji harbour the water receeded and then came back several times. This water housed the dolphins in the pen which were greatly affected and a few dolphins lost their lives. Well needless to say there is still dolphins in these cages within the Taiji town and no one, not even the trainers that say they love dolphins are doing anything for these dolphins. These dolphins are trapped in these water cages with netting and if you watch the video below with Ric O'Barry he is speaking about the horror these dolphins are currently facing and will face as the Typhoon picks up.

Brian Barnes who volunteers his time for Save Japan Dolphins has recently posted this as his status on facebook :
Taiji's first kills of the season seems to have happened without the boats even leaving the harbor. Several dolphins being held in the sea pens at Dolphin Base didn't make it through the storm. The dolphins were pushed against the side of the sea pen by the waves and likely drown. It's ironic, these dolphins were captured last season - but killed this season. - Brian Barnes
It seems we have some casualties from the Typhoon when responsible people do not care about another life in their care.
Many activists are preparing to go back again and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is leading their second volunteer run Taiji Campaign called "Operation Infinite Patience". Paul Watson says "Sea Shepherd's Cove Guardians cut the Taiji dolphin kill quota by half last season with over 65 crew stationed at Taiji over the 6 month period." I was one of the 65 activists last season and I am heading there again this coming season with no definite date set yet but aiming for the month of November. The energy you feel when amongst some worldwide individuals all there to end such horror to the dolphin species is a rush. Standing side by side to do the dolphins proud and get in the way of the murderers is an honour.

The Toronto Dolphin Day was a success with many active people coming from as far as Windsor, London, Brantford, Cambridge, and Barrie. A few activist dressed up like geisha girls holding signs about the dolphin slaughter. There were many honks, cheering, and sign waving as the group started in front of the Japanese Consulate at 77 King Street West from Noon till 4pm.

Below are some photos from the Toronto event.

`9 Days in Taiji` Posters

Its amazing how one thing leads to another and I am the first to tell anyone and everyone to take ALL OPPORTUNITIES - They will lead to more and take them too!

My 9 days in Taiji were life changing from the loss of almost 90 Dolphins of 4 species to the meeting of other passionate people that were able to make it to ground zero and share their energy and support for the dolphins. The stories I learned from each of the people I met are their own amazing stories that I can say are being talked about, shared, and respected from others within their own communities and myself.

I would like to share you with some amazing work done by three artists. One would be myself but not my art but my physical passion as an activist to use my fearless skill to create a mind over matter situation and endure the frigid cold for 30 minutes while it will never compare to the suffering and loss of life from the dolphins. The second artist would be Libby Katsinis - the Cove Guardian campaign leader who`s background is photography and she showed it very well with sharing her skill for these art pieces below. The third but not least of any sort is the artist who finalized the connection to us all and that is Pete Mander who is also an amazing artist in many ways from expensive collector costumes of the Predator to a visual artist.

I always say good things come in threes because I`m an optomistic person filled with positive energy and we connected in our own way to create a few posters that we hope to put out a great message - `PROTECT THE DOLPHINS`. These words were discussed to me by Ric O`Barry who knows how to do such that - Protect the Dolphins. So actually that would make 4 people and actually I`m sure there is more and that is what  positive energy does when emitted. The actions in a positive manner will extinguish the negative actions of any being that chooses to make such actions.

Please view the poster and share if you like - they will be up for sale soon to raise money for either the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society`s Cove Guardian action or Save Japan Dolphins. It will be the choice of the buyer where their money goes and both are for the dolphins.

So if you`re interested now then email me at timmons.animal.artist@gmail.com and tell me which one since there is 3 posted I will number them 1, 2, 3.
